At 10 weeks
At 10 weeks pregnant your baby is about the size of a jamun, around 30 mm long from head to bottom. The tail has gone, tiny fingers and toes have formed, and the heart beats at about 150 to 180 beats per minute. Your uterus is roughly the size of an orange, and bloating or heartburn are common.
Your Baby at 10 Weeks
The tadpole-like tail has disappeared, and your baby now has arms and legs with tiny fingers and toes, while the ankles, wrists, knees and elbows are still forming. The brain is active with brain waves, and the heart has 4 separate chambers (Pregnancy, Birth and Baby).
The face is more in proportion, though the head is still large for the body. The half-closed eyes can react to light, the upper lip and 2 little nostrils have formed, and the jaw bone holds tiny versions of the milk teeth (NHS).
Your baby is in another huge growth spurt and making jerky movements that can be seen on a scan. The heart is beating very quickly, at about 180 beats per minute, roughly 3 times your own heart rate (NHS).
Your Body This Week
Your uterus is now around the size of a large orange, and your jeans may feel tight. Progesterone relaxes the muscles of the womb so it can expand, but it also loosens the digestive tract, which can bring bloating, burping, wind and heartburn (NHS).
The same hormone slows food through the gut, so constipation is more likely. Many women feel emotional as well; ups and downs are normal, but seek advice if you feel consistently sad or worried for longer than 2 weeks (Pregnancy, Birth and Baby).
When to call your midwife or doctor: Talk to a health professional early if you have felt consistently sad or worried for more than 2 weeks. See your doctor if you have any bleeding, and raise any symptom that worries you with your midwife or doctor.
Garbh Sanskar This Week
A small daily practice for this stage, from Mamta’s 1:1 sessions. It is tradition and gentle self-care, not medical advice, so keep every check-up and follow your doctor or midwife first.
- Mantra: The Garbharakshambika Stotram is a devotional hymn to the goddess Garbharakshambika, linked with the Thirukarukavur temple near Thanjavur, asking her to protect beings in the womb. Recite a verse softly for a few minutes; Garbh Sanskar mantras explains how it differs from the Garbha Raksha Stotram.
- Music: Sit with a bhajan or calm piece of music you love after your evening meal, letting the day slow down around you.
- Gentle movement: Mamta's teaching this week is a short, easy stroll after meals, which the NHS also notes may help with bloating, breathing comfortably throughout. Keep it gentle, and only with your doctor's or midwife's clearance.
- Food: Traditionally, Charaka's third month pairs milk with a little honey and ghee; keep portions small, spread vegetarian food across 6 light meals and avoid eating late at night, alongside the iron, calcium and folic acid your doctor recommends.
- Garbh samvad (a line to say to your baby): I'm making room for you, slowly and happily.
Questions About Week 10
Does my baby have teeth at 10 weeks?
Not visible ones, but the jaw bone now holds tiny versions of your baby's milk teeth, according to the NHS. Pregnancy, Birth and Baby adds that the adult teeth develop at around 20 weeks.
Why am I bloated and burping at 10 weeks?
Progesterone relaxes the muscles of your womb so it can grow, but it also loosens the digestive tract, which can cause bloating, wind and heartburn. The NHS suggests 6 small meals a day, eating slowly, avoiding late-night meals and taking a short stroll after eating.
What screening tests are offered around 10 weeks?
Pregnancy, Birth and Baby says a scan is often recommended at around 12 weeks, especially if you are thinking about prenatal screening. Options include the non-invasive prenatal test (NIPT) and combined first trimester screening, which assess the chance of a chromosomal difference such as Down syndrome; both are optional.
