At 13 weeks

At 13 weeks pregnant, your baby is about the size of a pea pod (matar ki phali), around 7.4 cm long according to the NHS. Your baby is now fully formed and moving about, able to suck a thumb and make a fist, though you probably won't feel it yet. You have entered the second trimester, and a small bump may show as your womb grows upwards and outwards.

Your Baby at 13 Weeks

Your baby is now fully formed and moving about vigorously in the uterus, able to move their arms and legs, suck a thumb and form a fist, according to Pregnancy, Birth and Baby. Organs including the liver and pancreas are starting to work, the vocal cords are beginning to develop, and soft hair has appeared on the eyebrows and head.

The NHS describes your baby's first movements as jerky and random, becoming more deliberate over time. Thumb-sucking has a purpose too: it helps develop the sucking reflex your baby will need for feeding. You may not feel any movement until around week 17.

Your Body This Week

As your womb grows upwards and outwards, a small bump may now be visible, and if you have been needing to pee more often, that should ease as the womb moves away from your bladder. More blood is pumping around your pelvic area, which can make you thirstier, so keep drinking fluids (NHS).

You may notice more visible veins, especially in your breasts, and feel the ligaments stretching in your tummy and groin. Pregnancy, Birth and Baby adds that hormones can cause dark patches on the face or neck (melasma) or a dark line from the belly button down (linea nigra), which usually fade on their own after pregnancy.

When to call your midwife or doctor: Seek medical advice for any bleeding. If you come into contact with someone who has chickenpox or rubella, or think you could be infected, talk to your doctor or midwife straight away (NHS).

Garbh Sanskar This Week

A small daily practice for this stage, from Mamta’s 1:1 sessions. It is tradition and gentle self-care, not medical advice, so keep every check-up and follow your doctor or midwife first.

  • Mantra: Begin with Om, the single sacred syllable that the Mandukya Upanishad maps to waking, dreaming and deep sleep, with the silence after it as a fourth state. Sit comfortably and chant it in a soft voice for a few minutes, letting each sound fade naturally; the Garbh Sanskar mantras guide explains more.
  • Music: Choose calm music or a bhajan you already love and give yourself ten quiet minutes with it each day. At this stage it is simply care for your own mind as the second trimester begins.
  • Gentle movement: Mamta teaches a short daily walk at an easy pace as energy returns, and the NHS notes that even 10 minutes a day is a good start. Add a few gentle pelvic floor squeezes while seated, breathing normally throughout, and do both only with your doctor's or midwife's clearance.
  • Food: Traditionally, Charaka's third month (roughly weeks 9 to 13) recommends milk with honey and ghee, taken in amounts that suit your digestion. Enjoy it alongside the iron, calcium and folic acid your doctor recommends, never instead of them.
  • Garbh samvad (a line to say to your baby): Hello, little one, we have reached the second trimester together.

Questions About Week 13

Am I in the second trimester at 13 weeks?

Yes. Pregnancy, Birth and Baby says you have officially entered the second trimester at 13 weeks, and the chance of miscarriage decreases significantly from here. Many families choose this time to share their news.

Is it normal for my gums to bleed at 13 weeks pregnant?

Yes, swollen, painful and bleeding gums are common in pregnancy. The NHS suggests a soft toothbrush, brushing gently in circles, an alcohol-free mouthwash, and rinsing your mouth with water after being sick to protect your teeth from acid.

Is it safe to have sex at 13 weeks pregnant?

The NHS says sex during pregnancy is perfectly safe unless your midwife or doctor has advised you otherwise. Extra blood flow around the pelvic area can increase some women's sex drive at this stage.
